Because "company name" and "domain" aren't actually the same problem, and most tools treat them like they are.
The obvious cases, one name, one domain, one company, are the minority once you're working a real list. The messy cases show up constantly:
– Two unrelated businesses with the same or nearly the same name in different industries or regions, so a name match alone points you at the wrong one
– A legal entity name that doesn't match the brand name anyone actually searches for, the DBA and the incorporated name look nothing alike
– Franchise locations sharing a parent brand's name but each running on a completely different domain, or no domain at all
– Rebrands where the old domain still resolves, still ranks, and still shows up first in search, but the company hasn't used that name in two years
– Private equity portfolio companies that get renamed or merged into a platform brand, so the domain you find is technically correct and completely useless for outreach
Any one of these alone is easy to catch. The problem is they compound, a franchise location that also rebranded, a subsidiary with a DBA that also got acquired. By the time you're a few edge cases deep, "just search the company name" stops being a strategy.
What's the messiest domain-matching case you've personally run into?
