I stop trusting the name match entirely and switch to corroborating signals, in roughly this order.
Location first. If I have a city, state, or country on the record, I filter every domain candidate against the address on that site's contact or footer, or against its registered business address if I can find one. This alone kills most false matches immediately, since two companies sharing a name are rarely in the same metro area.
After location, in order:
– Industry or SIC/NAICS code, a "Meridian Consulting" in healthcare and a "Meridian Consulting" in construction are not going to be confused once you filter on industry
– Employee count range, useful mainly for ruling out a wildly wrong size match, a 3-person shop is not the "Meridian Consulting" that shows up in a 500-employee record
– Known contact email domain, if I already have even one verified email tied to the record, the domain on that email settles the question outright
– Cross-check against the company's LinkedIn page, the "website" field there is self-reported by the company and tends to be more reliable than a guessed search result
If none of that resolves it, I mark the record as unresolved and move on instead of guessing. A wrong domain doesn't just fail, it actively pollutes everything enriched off of it afterward, wrong industry, wrong size, wrong technographic data, all inherited from one bad match at the top.
