Trying to decide whether to go to school for IT:

I am trying to decide whether to pursue IT. I've been saving up in an educational IDA for about two years and have the chance to go to school soon. That being said, I need to figure out if it's realistic for me, and I don't want to waste my time going to school for something without fully understanding what I'm signing up for.

I'll start with where my interest developed. Earlier this year I was trying to figure out how to block Generative AI on my PC and it was way harder than I expected. But while I was tinkering with Command Prompt and learning about PowerShell, a wave of excitement and nostalgia hit me. I grew up in the time where MySpace was a thing. Like in my middle school years. Like others who were active on MySpace at the time, I spent so much time customizing my profile and I really loved memorizing the codes so I could enter them in without having to look things up on other sites. It was a genuine hobby. Until MySpace died, Facebook took over and I never looked back.

I'd contemplated learning code here and there because it seems so fun to me. Ironically, I am also peculiarly low tech in some areas of my life. I hate smart phones with a passion and use a minimalist phone and do not own a TV for example. But I do own a PC and a Nintendo Switch and like my tech intentional, not mindless scrolling.

So what am I trying to figure out here? Well I'm wondering what is it actually like starting out in IT? A day in the life kind of stuff. I want to figure out if it's something I'll enjoy. If I'm so particular about what's on my PC (so much is blocked via NextDNS) and hate smart phones, apps, social media, etc with a passion, will I find a job I don't hate? Or is my tinkering just a hobby?

The other huge factor is this. I am a stay at home parent and I'm homeschooling. It will be many years before I am ready for a full time job. I also have chronic health issues. I need a job where I can work remotely and I need it to be as flexible or part time as possible. I was kind of convinced IT could fulfill that need for me. But I might be wrong. And I'd love to know if I'm wrong before I dump a bunch of time and money into school.
