Showdown (1942), directed by I. Sparber, is the 11th entry in the legendary Fleischer Studios Superman series. Moving away from sci-fi monsters and sci-fi tech, this entry plays out like a classic urban crime thriller. A mysterious figure dons a Superman suit to rob high-security vaults, turning all of Metropolis against the real hero. Clark Kent has to clear his name and catch his deceptive double under intense public scrutiny.
Like many entries in the series, Showdown is in the public domain in the United States. Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works required a mandatory copyright renewal after their initial 28-year term. Because the renewal filing was missed, the short entered the public domain and can be freely archived, streamed, and shared today.
