Where domain hunters compare notes

My plan to implement ProtonMail and SimpleLogin (any advice will be well received)

Hi everyone. I'm a fairly new Proton user. Before that, I lived my Gmail life in happiness. But after exploring this subreddit, I decided to try to de-google my life, starting with my mail. I wanted to ask how to proceed with some stuff and hear your thoughts. My plan is to finish implementing this in the following weeks, and then edit this post so it's useful for future users with zero knowledge of technical internet things (like me).

I'll start with what I have already done:

First: I created a Proton account

I took an offer for 1 year of Unlimited with the first month costing €1. I decided, however, to switch to Proton Mail Plus after the first month finishes (still pending as I have 3 more weeks with Unlimited). My first impulse was to degoogle everything at once, but I'll take baby steps and will continue with Google/Icloud for photos; I tried Proton Drive for photos but sync wasn't convenient so I couldn't convince my partner to get Duo 😛

Second: I bought a custom domain + created my first email account with it

A new user like me one week ago may ask: Why? Following the advice of people here, I realized I wanted to own my domain in case I decide to leave Proton in the future. I went with Porkbun and, after following Proton's guide (although still needed to solve some things with Gemini, since terms like TXT, MX, etc were absolutely new to me), I managed to set the domain in Proton. After that, I created an email address with that account to start using in formal instances. I went with first+name@customdomain.com. I still haven't done it, but I will use this account for banks, put on my CV, government, etc.

Tip for newbies: when you buy the domain, you don't need to buy any type of hosting.

Third: I created an account on SimpleLoging

Since I still have Unlimited on Proton, the account in SimpleLogin is Premium. I will have to pay both Proton Mail Plus and SimpleLogin Premium starting in October. My plan is: move to Mail Plus and pay SimpleLogin Premium monthly until Black Friday, and see if then there's either a) a good offer for Unlimited, or b) a discount on the yearly payments for Mail Plus and SimpleLogin. I'm open to your suggestions in this regard 🙂

Everything till here is done, this is my plan for the following weeks:

Fourth: To create a subdomain + start using alias

I'd like to create a subdomain on Porkbun and associate it to SimpleLogin. I'd use this subdomain for anything that is not as important as to give them my [first+name@customdomain.com](mailto:first+name@customdomain.com) address. For online stuff, I plan to use the subdomain with the the alias feature.

Fifth: Set SimpleLogin to be able to create email addresses on the spot with the "secret code"

I didn't know this was a thing, but again, thank god for people in Reddit. I plan to use the "secret code" prefix feature, so that I can create mails on the spot of the type "abc+shopname@subdomain.com" (prefix "abc" in this case) when doing in-person stuff or for online things I still want certain clarity about (like reddit, amazon, or linkedin). I understand the prefix is not necessary for aliases created with SimpleLogin for the unimportant stuff.

My questions are:

  • Do you think this is a good/viable plan?
  • Is there anything I'm missing or overthinking?
  • Would you do something differently?

Thank you in advance for your comments!!

(And also to everyone posting in this subreddit, I've read SO MANY posts and advice from you already, which has been super helpful to implement and discover new things)
