“Just use a VPN bro” completely misses the point

I keep seeing people respond to the possible Discord ban with “just use a VPN” or “just change your DNS.”

I’m not saying people shouldn’t share workarounds. Useful naman sila. Ang issue is when “just use a VPN” is treated as if that completely solves the problem.

It’s not about whether you can technically tweak something to access Discord. Hindi lahat tech-savvy enough to configure a VPN, change DNS settings, or troubleshoot kapag may hindi gumana.

And the word “just” is kind of the point here. “You can use a VPN as a workaround” is one thing. “Just use a VPN” makes it sound like the restriction is no big deal because everyone can simply do it and move on.

Importantly, constantly treating workarounds as the answer also normalizes this kind of thing and makes further restrictions easier to accept. Today it’s “just change your DNS.” Tomorrow it could be another restriction, another workaround, another layer of friction, until accessing ordinary online services requires users to jump through a bunch of technical hoops.
