FritzBoxSyncApp – FRITZ!Box devices & IPv4/IPv6 DNS synchronization for Technitium DNS

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a small project for Technitium DNS and wanted to share it with the community.

FritzBoxSyncApp synchronizes device information between a FRITZ!Box and Technitium DNS.

What it does

  • Synchronizes FRITZ!Box devices with Technitium DNS DHCP reservations
  • Matches devices using their MAC addresses
  • Synchronizes hostnames / device names
  • Supports IPv6 synchronization
  • Synchronizes stable IPv6 GUA and ULA addresses
  • Creates missing AAAA records
  • Updates existing AAAA records, including TTL and comments
  • Removes outdated AAAA records
  • Configurable synchronization interval
  • Optional dry-run mode
  • Configuration is stored in the Technitium app configuration
  • New configuration options can be added automatically during startup

IPv6

One of the main reasons I started working on this was IPv6.

FRITZ!Box devices can have multiple IPv6 addresses, including GUA and ULA addresses. FritzBoxSyncApp checks the addresses reported by the FRITZ!Box and synchronizes the stable addresses to Technitium as AAAA records.

Multiple IPv6 addresses per device are supported.

Temporary/privacy addresses are not treated as stable addresses.

Example

A device can end up with multiple AAAA records in Technitium, for example:

device.koch.local AAAA fdxx:xxxx:... AAAA 2xxx:xxxx:...

The application also removes AAAA records that are no longer reported as stable addresses by the FRITZ!Box.

If a device temporarily has no stable IPv6 address, existing AAAA records are currently left untouched to avoid deleting valid DNS records because of a temporary condition.

Current status

The project is working on my own Technitium/FRITZ!Box setup, and I’ve just published a new release.

I’m sharing it mainly to get feedback from other Technitium DNS and FRITZ!Box users.

If you try it, I’d be interested to hear whether it works with your setup and what features you think would be useful.
