Hey everyone, Like a lot of people, I've been watching the AI dev tool space turn into a sea of identical browser wrappers. Almost every tool out there either traps your code inside a throttled cloud Docker container, or forces you to deal with fragile setups, broken webviews, and OS-level telemetry/screen recall tracking your moves.
I spent the last few months building NIBL — a native desktop AI workstation that executes code on bare-metal Windows with native Rust guards.
The Problem It Solves:
Most "AI agent" platforms don't actually touch your real machine. They run in a cloud sandbox, charge you monthly, and make you push/pull files constantly. NIBL flips the model: The desktop app is a high-performance native executor on your actual hardware, backed by managed inference. You don't have to configure API keys, manage local model weights, or mess with environment variables. It works out of the box while keeping your files strictly on your machine.
What’s Happening Under the Hood: Real-Metal Terminal Execution: It doesn't run commands in an abstracted web container. Powered by a native Rust micro-kernel, it uses Win32 Job Objects (CreateJobObjectW) and Windows ConPTY to spawn real PowerShell, CMD, and WSL Bash sessions with hard CPU caps and memory limits so a subagent can never freeze or fork-bomb your PC.
NIBL Drive: All agent files, game projects, and assets are kept in a local NVMe vault. It uses a zero-copy memory-mapped file streaming engine (aligned to Windows' 64KB allocation boundary) so you can scrub through gigabytes of generated files without choking Electron's V8 memory. You can also upload your own files to the NIBL Drive for storage if you don't want to use OneDrive.
Virtual Memory Swap Paging: When multi-agent contexts and scratchpads get massive, the engine compresses inactive memory blocks with LZ4 and swaps them directly to disk pages, freeing up RAM. All chats, swarm memories, etc are stored locally on your local machine.
Built-in Creative & Dev Tooling: Direct local bridge hooks into Blender (bpy Python scripting for procedural 3D generation) and Godot 4.x (scene graph and project scaffolding, both interacted with at arm's length via CLI), alongside Playwright browser automation and MCP servers.
Telemetry & Tracking Defense: Includes low-level privacy features that apply local DNS sinks and system registry shields to silence Windows telemetry, background trackers, and uninvited screen recorders via opt-in toggles.
Headless CLI / TUI: If you prefer working in the console, there's a standalone terminal interface (nibl) that talks to the desktop engine via local Windows named pipes. Current Status I just rolled out the v1.0.0 Beta. It’s been an intense journey turning autonomous swarms into a rock-solid desktop environment.
