#at time of posting the test is still going on will update the post when every thing finishes.
as the new feature has arrived in Fritz Box i was excited at first how far it can block
- Is there any limit to block list?
- Would that be stable enough to block thousands of queries at a time?
- How much delay we expect from Fritz Router in general queries
- How much Fritz could heatup?
- How much RAM it needs
- What features are actually missing here?
Many of the answers can be derived from my test
First let me tell you i have Fritz 5590 only to test on, other devices might give different results.
Lists I'm using Hagezi's List
- Multi Pro Full
- Gambling Full
- NSF#
- Threat Intelligence Feeds (Full)
Testing environment
- Python
- N305 Intel
- Ubuntu 24
- Dig
i made a custom script that uses dig command to retrieve the data from the given downloaded lists and try to resolve it with dig if it return 0.0.0.0than it is counted as blocked if it returns something else it is counted as Bypassed
The max i can throw requests are 109/s this is the max my system can go to try to resolve the domain name.
The Current Results are
Total Scan Completed 37% of 2,922,505
Bypassed 70 domains
Blocked 99.99%
The interesting part the Fritz Box is quite calm and no Heatup is observed
same goes to the CPU usage a slight 3-7 percent increase only since the test is running
the other interesting part is RAM Allocation that went down instead of climbing up
it was 30% Static and 19% dynamic but after test started it goes to 12% Dynamic
RAM goes 7% less consumed by Fritz Box
So the Answers for the question could be these
- Is there any limit to block list?
- I guess not even i try to add NDR 1-14 and it still blocks the these lists are huge so i need to remove them to test the results for this test.
- Would that be stable enough to block thousands of queries at a time?
- IMO yes it could handle thousands of queries without any hassle
- How much delay we expect from Fritz Router in general queries?
- I would give detail analysis in coming days but from current testing it is hardly 1ms delay as the blocked sites retun
0.0.0.0in 1ms
- I would give detail analysis in coming days but from current testing it is hardly 1ms delay as the blocked sites retun
- How much Fritz could heatup?
- Na it is not even climbing 1 Degree C
- How much RAM it needs
- i cannot test this but as i have a 2GB Unit but what i have read on Hagezi Website that beginner model do have limit of 230,000 total domain list in 7530 Model so 230,000 are enough to use MultiPro list i think it is quite enough to do a basic ad blocking task.
- What features are actually missing here?
- to answer this i like to say many users who gonna use this are the ones that are coming from already running ad block or DNS servers on there site, and the users from these kind of platforms are gonna miss a lot of things here like query list etc. but from my perspective at least there is something should be available for fritz box DNS block list that if any domain got blocked by DNS is it it should have a log so at least we know it is blocked by DNS Filer and not by ISP or Gov of that country. And an option to pause a current added list rather deleting it entirely if we are working with multiple list at same time.
A Shoutout to the AWM team that bring such a good feature that at least My self never expected from Router manufacturing Company
