I run a Ubiquiti network and rely on dynamic DNS because I have multiple VPNs (L2TP, WireGuard and Teleport). Why multiple? Well, if you have ever had one fail while you are out of town…. I do no port forwarding and don't have anyone else accessing my network and do not have QuickConnect running.
Anyway, in light of the Synology and Plex situations this week I am thinking through my DDNS. Currently I have:
Synology DDNS – runs on the NAS, checks the IP every few minutes. It just works.
Afraid.org DDNS – have to manually update it every few months. It's legacy, don't really use it because I rely on Synology.
Trying to understand if Synology DDNS has any elevated security risk relative to others. Since it is running and "just works" I'd rather not pull the plug and just change for change's sake.
My leading alternatives are switch back over to Afraid or go with something like Duck DDNS or No-IP because I can set up a service on my Proxmox PVE to manage the updates.
Am I overthinking this? Is Synology an issue on the DDNS side?
