Where domain hunters compare notes

Game Bar can’t record the desktop on Windows 10, so I made a free recorder that zooms in on your clicks

I make a lot of short how-to videos for work, and on Windows 10 the built-in options kept letting me down.

  • Game Bar only records one app window. No desktop, no File Explorer, and if you switch apps mid-recording it just keeps filming the old one.
  • Snipping Tool got screen recording, but only on Windows 11.
  • OBS works, but it’s a lot of setup for a 2-minute “here’s where the setting is” clip, and you still have to edit it afterwards.
  • ShareX is great for screenshots. Its recording is pretty bare.

What I actually wanted was the Screen Studio look, where the video zooms in on what you click and the cursor moves smoothly. That’s Mac only, and I’m on Windows. So I built one.

It’s called screenrecordwindows.com (yes, the name is just the domain). What it does:

  • Press Alt+R and record a screen, a window or a drag-selected area, with mic, computer sound and webcam if you want.
  • When you stop, the video is already edited: it zooms in where you clicked and typed, and the shaky mouse path is smoothed out. You can change any of it on a timeline.
  • It finds email addresses, API keys and card numbers on screen and blurs them. That’s mostly why I use it for work stuff.
  • Everything stays on your PC. There’s an optional share link that expires after 7 days, if you’d rather not send a file.

Being upfront about the catches:

  • The installer isn’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you. Signing is on the list.
  • Free exports go up to 1080p with a small watermark. Pro removes it and adds 4K.

It works on Windows 10 and 11. I’d really like feedback from people who record their screen more than I do, especially anything that breaks on your setup.
