If Windows 11 says “Windows isn’t activated” or throws an error code at you, you’re not alone. I deal with activation issues daily, and about 90% of them fall into these seven cases. Find yours below.
Before anything else: open Settings → System → Activation and note the exact error code. The code tells you what’s wrong far better than the message does.
1. Error 0xC004C008 – “This product key has already been used”
The key is tied to another PC, or it’s been activated more times than it allows. Retail keys usually allow one PC at a time.
Fix:
- If you moved to a new PC and it’s a Retail key, run the Activation troubleshooter (Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot) and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently.”
- If you still have the old PC, deactivate it:
slmgr /upkin an admin Command Prompt, then activate on the new one. - If you bought the key and it was already used, the seller gave you a used key. Ask them for a replacement.
2. Error 0xC004F050 – “The product key is invalid”
Usually an edition mismatch: a Windows 11 Pro key entered on Windows 11 Home (or the reverse), or a key for a different product (Windows 10 OEM, Server, N edition).
Fix: check your edition under Settings → System → About → Windows specifications. If you have Home and a Pro key, see #4. Also copy-paste the key instead of typing it; a 0/O or 8/B mix-up gives the same error.
3. Error 0xC004C003 – “The product key has been blocked”
Microsoft blocked the key. Common with keys from auction sites, “unlimited use” sellers, or keys that were refunded or reported stolen.
Fix: there’s no workaround; the key is dead. Contact the seller for a refund or replacement, and buy from a seller that offers an activation guarantee.
4. Error 0x803FA067 – upgrading from Home to Pro fails
You entered a Pro key on Windows 11 Home and the upgrade stops or loops. Windows sometimes needs a push to switch editions before it accepts your key.
Fix:
- Disconnect from the internet.
- Settings → System → Activation → Change product key → enter Microsoft’s generic Pro key:
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T(this key only switches the edition; it does not activate). - Let Windows switch to Pro and restart.
- Reconnect to the internet, then enter your real Pro key.
5. “Windows isn’t activated” after a hardware change (new motherboard, SSD, or CPU)
Windows ties the activation to your hardware. A big change makes it look like a new PC.
Fix: link your Microsoft account before the change (Settings → Accounts). After the change, run the Activation troubleshooter → “I changed hardware on this device recently” and pick your PC from the list. If you have a Retail key, just re-enter it.
6. Error 0x8007007B / 0x8007232B – “DNS name does not exist”
Windows is trying to reach a corporate KMS server that doesn’t exist. This happens with volume/KMS keys installed on a home PC, or on a laptop that came from a company.
Fix: you need a proper Retail or OEM key, not a KMS one. Enter it under Change product key. If the error persists, run slmgr /ckms in an admin Command Prompt to clear the old server name, then try again.
7. Error 0x803F7001 / 0xC004F213 – “Windows reported that no product key was found”
Windows was installed without a key (clean install, skipped the key screen) or the stored digital license didn’t carry over.
Fix: Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter yours. If the PC came with Windows preinstalled, the OEM key is stored in the firmware; run wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey in an admin Command Prompt to read it.
Still stuck? Post a comment with:
- the error code
- your edition (Home / Pro) and whether the key is Retail, OEM, or unknown
- what you’ve already tried
and we’ll figure it out.
Quick note: never paste your product key in public. Blur it in screenshots.
