Hey everyone!
I’m considering replacing my MikroTik RB5009 with a TP-Link Omada Fusion 2.5G and wanted to hear your thoughts, especially from anyone who’s made a similar switch.
My current setup:
Router: MikroTik RB5009
Wi-Fi: Three Omada APs
Controller: Omada Software Controller running in a Docker container
DNS: Pi-hole running on the RB5009
Dual WAN: Fibre + Starlink, using MikroTik PCC for load balancing and automatic failover
Homelab: Proxmox with several VMs and LXCs
The RB5009 has been absolutely flawless. It’s rock solid, and my dual-WAN setup works perfectly. I really have no complaints about it.
The main reason I’m considering switching is to have everything under the Omada ecosystem, with a single interface for managing the network. The 2.5GbE connectivity is also appealing. Having built-in DPI and IPS/IDS packet inspection is interesting too, although I’m not sure whether it would justify giving up the flexibility of RouterOS.
However, I’m hesitant about giving up RouterOS, especially its flexibility with PCC, routing rules, and failover.
A few questions:
-
How does Omada handle dual-WAN load balancing compared with MikroTik PCC?
-
Is failover reliable, particularly with a Fibre + Starlink combination?
-
Would I lose significant routing, firewall, or policy-control functionality?
-
How well does the Omada Fusion 2.5G perform with DPI and IPS/IDS enabled?
-
Does the unified Omada management experience actually justify switching routers?
-
Are there any limitations when using the Omada controller in Docker rather than on an Omada hardware controller?
I’m aware that the RB5009 is a very capable router, so this might be more of a sidegrade—or even a downgrade—rather than an upgrade.
For those who have used both, would you make the switch, or stick with the RB5009 until there’s a compelling reason to replace it?
I’d especially appreciate feedback from anyone running dual WAN with fibre and Starlink on the Omada Fusion 2.5G.
