Where domain hunters compare notes

I do not trust a single-number AI visibility score without the raw answers

A dashboard says a brand has an AI visibility score of 62.

My first reaction is not “good” or “bad.” It is: 62 based on what?

A single number can hide several completely different states. The brand might appear frequently but be described incorrectly. It might be cited by Perplexity and absent from Gemini. It might show up for broad informational prompts but disappear from every commercial decision query. It might earn citations from outdated pages that no longer support the claims being made.

Those outcomes should not collapse into the same interpretation.

At minimum, I want five components kept separate:

  1. Presence: Did the entity appear in the answer?
  2. Role: Was it recommended, compared, criticized, or merely named?
  3. Accuracy: Were category, audience, capabilities, pricing, and limitations correct?
  4. Citation: Was a visible source attached to the relevant statement?
  5. Support: Did that source actually support the statement?

Platform and query type need to remain separate too. Averaging ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI surfaces into one score can erase the reason a team needs to act.

Composite scores are not automatically bad. They can help an executive see direction over time, especially when the calculation is stable and documented. The problem starts when the score replaces the evidence instead of summarizing it.

Before paying for a GEO tracking tool, I would ask:

  • Can I export the full answer text?
  • Are exact prompt versions preserved?
  • Are platforms and dates stored separately?
  • Can I see every cited URL, not only the domain?
  • Does the tool distinguish mention from recommendation?
  • Can a human mark factual accuracy and claim support?
  • Does the scoring formula change without notice?

The least exciting feature is often the most important: an audit trail.

Raw answers are messy. Human review takes time. Query sets are imperfect, and no dashboard removes platform volatility. Still, a score without inspectable inputs creates false confidence.

Use the number as a navigation signal if it helps. Keep the evidence that lets someone explain why it moved.
