Where domain hunters compare notes

I built UNA so hosting your own email takes an evening instead of a weekend (paid, 90-day free trial)

Hi r/selfhosted, I'm Ron, and I built UNA.

Email is the one service a lot of us leave alone even when we self-host everything else. The pieces aren't the hard part: Postfix, Rspamd and ClamAV are well known. The hard part is wiring them together, getting DNS right, and keeping it all running. I wanted to make that part easy, and that's what UNA is for.

How it works: – On a small VPS, run git clone and ./install.sh. The installer asks for your domain and generates every password, container, and database. – It writes every DNS record you need (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) onto a page on your own server, with a copy button for each one. – Then you open the webmail in a browser and sign in. On a phone, it installs to the home screen with notifications.

Under the hood it's 8 containers in one compose file: Postfix, Rspamd, ClamAV, Postgres, Redis, nginx, certbot, and a Next.js webmail.

What you get once it's running: – An address for every sender (netflix@, bank@), all in one inbox, with each message showing which address it was sent to – Switch off an address that leaks, and the sender is told it doesn't exist. Rotate to a fresh one in one step – Spam scored by Rspamd, attachments scanned by ClamAV, and a filter that learns from what you mark – ./backup.sh writes one archive with everything, DKIM keys included, so moving to a new server is easy

Being upfront about the rest: – It's paid: free for 90 days with everything on, then €49/year per install, with unlimited users and mailboxes – It's proprietary. The images are public, but it isn't open source – Webmail only, no IMAP or POP3, so Apple Mail, Outlook and Thunderbird don't connect – It needs a VPS with port 25 open, not a home connection. One domain per install – It does a daily license check with the install ID, mail domain, and license key. Never mail

One question I'd really like answered: if you've avoided hosting your own email, what stopped you? That's exactly what I'm trying to make easy, and I'd rather hear it from you than guess.
