Where domain hunters compare notes

Why do some genuinely good B2B products get zero mentions from ChatGPT or Perplexity?

We've been running AI visibility checks for B2B startups, and one pattern keeps coming up. A product can be well built, have happy customers, and still never get named when someone asks an assistant "what's the best tool for X". When we dig into why, it's almost never about the product itself. It usually comes down to three gaps showing up together.

The first is no entity anchor. The model has nothing stable to attach the brand to. The homepage says something like "the operating system for modern teams", the About page says something slightly different, and nowhere is there a plain sentence saying what the product is, who it's for, and what category it belongs in. If a model can't confidently place you in a category, it can't recommend you in that category.

The second is no third-party corroboration. The only place the product is described is its own website. There are no comparison articles, no review site profiles, no community threads, no independent write-ups. Assistants lean heavily on sources that aren't the brand talking about itself, so a company that only exists on its own domain looks thin, even when the product is solid.

The third is content that only answers the brand's own question. Plenty of startups publish regularly, but the posts answer "why our approach is better" or announce features. Buyers asking AI assistants ask different questions: how do I solve this problem, what should I compare, what does this cost, what are the alternatives to the tool I already use. If none of your content answers the question the buyer actually typed, there's nothing for the model to pull from.

Any one of these on its own is survivable. All three together, which is common for early stage companies without a marketing team, usually means a mention rate of zero across engines.

The fixes aren't mysterious, but they take sustained work: a consistent one-line definition used everywhere, getting listed and described on the third-party sources the engines actually cite for your category, and writing pages that answer buyer questions rather than your own. Then measuring again to see which changes moved anything, because some do and some don't.

Curious whether others here have seen the same thing. If you've checked how AI assistants describe your product, which of these gaps was the biggest one for you?
