I’ve been doing some proper testing around VPN coexistence with Roam Control, and this turned out to be a much bigger win than I expected.
LocalDevVPN and a separate Personal VPN can stay connected at the same time on iOS.
Roam Control’s LocalDevVPN sits under Device VPN, while a compatible IKEv2 connection can sit separately under Personal VPN.
The screenshot shows the end result: both connected simultaneously while using 5G.
This also works over Wi-Fi. The Personal VPN and LocalDevVPN can remain connected together whether the iPhone is using mobile data or Wi-Fi, depending on how your Personal VPN is configured.
That means if you normally keep a VPN connected, you don’t necessarily have to disconnect it just to use Roam Control.
I’ve tested this with several commercial IKEv2 VPN configurations, as well as a completely self-hosted setup using strongSwan on a Raspberry Pi. In the self-hosted setup, my iPhone can route its normal internet traffic back through my home connection while LocalDevVPN stays active separately for Roam Control.
I’ve now added new documentation covering:
- using a Personal VPN alongside Roam Control
- confirmed VPN compatibility
- the difference between Device VPN and Personal VPN
- an advanced self-hosted strongSwan/IKEv2 guide for Linux and Raspberry Pi
- certificates, EAP-MSCHAPv2, NAT, port forwarding, DNS and troubleshooting
One important detail from testing: manually adding an IKEv2 configuration directly through iOS Settings appeared under Device VPN, so it competed with LocalDevVPN instead of coexisting with it. The working setup needs the second VPN to appear under Personal VPN.
This is completely optional. Roam Control does not require a separate internet VPN.
Also, just to avoid any confusion, this is not a new Roam Control release. Version 0.9.3 is still the current public release. This is a compatibility discovery and a new set of documentation for something the existing app can already do.
The new guides are live in the GitHub repository now:

If anyone tests another VPN setup, I’d be interested to hear whether it appears under Personal VPN, whether LocalDevVPN stays connected, and whether normal internet access continues to work on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
