I'm at the end of my gd rope with my connection constantly dropping when I'm trying to play Steam games with friends. I don't know if it's a Data issue, a Steam issue, a Visible issue, or a Discord issue, or some combo of all of it. And I'm not tech-savvy enough to really do a deep-dive on the technicalities of it all without some direction or walkthrough.
For background info: I live in a pretty rural coastal tourist town, which mostly gets Spectrum as its main service. Problem is, I'm in a studio that was split-off from the duplex above me. My address technically isn't recognized as an official U.S. address, which makes it un-serviceable for pretty much every company, including Spectrum, because Spectrum is already servicing my upstairs neighbors so they keep saying that there can't be more than two modems in one unit. And my property management won't do shit about it.
I used Centurylink for 8 years, since it was the ONLY other service I was able to have in my place. Shit was practically dial-up, which slowly kept bumping its pricing over time. I was fed up with over-paying for barely functional Wi-Fi, and at the same time was fed up with Verizon. So earlier this year, I ditched Centurylink in favor of unlimited data thru Visible.
And it worked great! For all of about two months, before the spottiness started becoming almost unmanageable. I chalked it up to summer tourist crowds congesting the Data networks, and I figured that trying to use Data as my primary internet source when trying to connect online would give me some headache, but surely it shouldn't still be THIS bad??
I have tried flushing my DNS settings. I do it once a week. I turn my Data off and on almost daily, sometimes bumping Airplane mode on and off. I have turned off hardware acceleration in Discord. I clean my caches regularly on my laptop and phone. I make sure my bandwith is set to 5GHz.
I genuinely don't know what to do anymore, but it's starting to wear on my mental health that I can't even enjoy playing games with my closest friends without getting dropped every five fucking minutes. I'm not in a position that I could afford satellite internet and I'm not even sure that would be worth it, seeing how fall & winter brings some pretty nasty wind & rain storms that would just knock out my connection altogether. Am I just up shit's creek without a paddle? Any advice would be appreciated, I wasn't even sure which subreddit to put this under since it seems like the perfect storm of many things working against each other. 😩
