I’m new to networking and trying to understand the practical benefits of OpenWrt.
I already have an Airtel-provided router, and my internet connection works without any problems. If I need to change the DNS, I can do that individually on each device, so it doesn’t seem like a major inconvenience.
Because of this, I’m not really sure why OpenWrt is so popular. What specific problems does it solve compared with a normal ISP-provided router?
Are there any meaningful benefits for an average home user, such as better security, more control, improved performance, ad blocking, VPN support, or device-wide DNS settings?
I’d appreciate a beginner-friendly explanation, including situations where switching to OpenWrt may not be worth it.
