June-July 26′ root query spike?

In a networking course, we took a look at the Total Queries Received chart for root servers:

https://rssac002.root-servers.org/

Obviously, you can see a huge spike in late June early July. No one in the class was aware of the event. The only information I found regarding the event came from ICANN itself:

I was wondering if anyone knew any more information regarding the event beyond what was stated in the report. I haven't been able to find a single news report, reddit / forum post talking about this, and it seems odd due to the scale of the event.
