The internet looks like a futuristic machine operated by trillion-dollar companies, but much of it rests on decades-old code and open-source software maintained by small teams—or sometimes one exhausted person working for free. Cloudflare, Amazon, Microsoft and the AI industry build enormous systems on top of shared foundations such as Linux, programming libraries and DNS: the global address book that tells your device where websites live.
The cartoon exaggerates, but its warning is real. Our digital world isn’t one seamless machine; it’s a precarious tower of old standards, emergency patches, volunteer labour and systems nobody wants to replace because everything else depends on them. We trust it each time we bank, communicate or ask an AI a question—and mostly notice the invisible people holding it together only when something breaks.
