Where domain hunters compare notes

Is it worth the hassle to transfer a godaddy domain name?

Moved six of my own names off godaddy in january, mostly because the renewals had crept up to about three times what i pay now, and the process is less frightening than the warnings make it sound. To transfer a godaddy domain name out it runs like this: 1. unlock the domain in the panel, 2. turn the privacy service off for an hour if the confirmation mail never arrives, 3. copy the auth code, 4. paste it at the new registrar and pay, 5. approve the mail that comes back, and it completed in a few hours rather than the five days they warn you about.

Two things nobody mentions. A name cannot be transferred at all in the first 60 days after you register it or after you change the owner details, so if you have just bought it you are waiting whether you like it or not.

And this is the one that got me. The DNS does not travel with the domain. If you were using their nameservers, the moment the transfer lands, that zone is gone and everything in it goes too.

i lost email on one name for twenty six minutes because the MX records only ever existed in their panel and i had not written them down anywhere. Screenshot the whole zone before you start. Better than that, move the DNS to cloudflare a week ahead of the transfer, so by the time the name moves the records are already living somewhere else and the transfer is just a billing change.
