First of all, I’m SUPER hyped that we’re getting Classic Forever.
Honestly, it feels like a dream come true. Finally our own World of Warcraft version of OSRS, where the world, the journey, and the adventure actually matter. A lot of what I saw yesterday looked great and I seriously can’t wait for November 4th.
BUT… I already have a few concerns that I really hope Blizzard gets right, because these are the things that make Classic feel like Classic. For me atleast.
1. Art style
I know we can keep the old-school graphics, but some of the new visuals, even the new cinematic, gave me that modern “Disneyfication” feeling Warcraft has moved toward.
Keep that for Retail.
Classic should preserve the original Warcraft identity: darker, rougher, more mature dark fantasy, closer to Warhammer in terms of monsters, blood, muscles, danger, sexuality, and atmosphere. You can modernize the graphics without losing the original soul. Just compare the original Vanilla cinematic to the new one and you immediately feel the difference.
Please, Blizzard be bold and keep Warcraft looking like original Warcraft.
2. Transmog
Personally, I don’t think transmog belongs in Classic at all. But apparently some people do, so being able to toggle it on/off seems like a OK compromise.
3. In-game shop
This is a BIG one for me, even if it’s “only cosmetics.”
If you see something cool in the game, you should know that person earned it by playing the game, not by pulling out a credit card. Seeing pre-order cosmetics and a store already worries me. Rather charge with boxprice and ''expansions''.
4. Dungeon Finder
I thought I saw some form of Dungeon Finder during some streams. I really hope I’m wrong and it is just a place to ''write your name up''.
5. Servers (edit)
I really hope there will be old school servers for PvE, PvP, RP, and RP-PvP. For me, server reputation, smaller communities, and seeing the same names around the world are a huge part of the classic RPG experience.
I really hope we’re not getting mega-servers with everything being cross-realm. Server identity and server communities are a must for me.
But maybe I’m overthinking it, and hopefully these concerns turn out to be nothing. But outside of WoW Classic (which is a re-release from Blizzards prime), Blizzard has disappointed me a lot in the post-WotLK years, so I’m honestly worried they might miss this huge opportunity.
Because outside of that, I’m insanely hyped.
I really hope Blizzard has learned what Classic+ needs to be and that Classic Forever becomes a long-term success, for there is a huge demand for old school MMORPGs. Not a retail -, we have plenty of ''modern'' MMOs.
Neverthenless see you in Azeroth!
