I'm at a loss here. I have a gigabit connection with my ISP and lately nothing seems to work properly. Modem is ISP's, router is an Asus RT-BE92U. Everything used to work fine on my network but recently my network speeds are a rollercoaster.
On my desktop, speeds will crater from 800-900 Mbps to 0 every few seconds. If I'm gaming/streaming/whatever, I'll go from buttery smooth latency to feeling like I'm playing on a 56k modem.
This is what I see in task manager if I try to download something in Firefox, Steam, Epic, etc. Doesn't matter what I'm doing, the spikes are consistent. Speed tests range anywhere from 5 Mbps to 900 Mbps, changes every time I run one.
Things I've tried:
- Hard resetting and power cycling everything (modem first, then router, also PC).
- Swapped Ethernet cables and router ports.
- Three different firmware versions on the router, factory resetting each time. Couldn't update as I was already on most recent version.
- Flushed DNS, reset the TCP/IP stack, and reset the Winsock catalog.
- Ditched ISP's primary and secondary DNS for Cloudflare and Google.
- Uninstalled Ethernet adapter and drivers, rolled driver back. Couldn't update as I was already on most recent version.
- Enabled/disabled QoS on router (AiMesh and a bunch of other bloaty shit has been disabled from the start).
A continuous ping to Google, Cloudflare, etc. doesn't show any real ping spikes, yet my download speeds are simultaneously 0. Trace route always times out on hop 2, but as far as I understand, that's not unusual if my ISP's modem is blocking ICMP requests (every hop after is fine).
I can also ping the router directly just fine. A speed test on the router itself doesn't seem to have much variability, it's like something is screwed in the LAN to WAN conversion.
What is going on here!?
