Where domain hunters compare notes

What to check before switching email marketing platforms

Switching email marketing platforms can solve real problems, but it can also create new ones if you migrate without a plan.

Before moving your email list, review these seven areas:

Subscriber data
Identify which tags, custom fields, consent records, segments, and subscription dates need to move.

Forms and landing pages
List every embedded form and signup link that will need to be replaced.

Automations
Document triggers, delays, conditions, exclusions, and the exact emails in each sequence.

Templates and branding
Save the copy, links, images, and formatting you want to recreate.

Integrations
Check your website, ecommerce tools, payment processor, webinar platform, CRM, and analytics setup.

Sending-domain authentication
Configure the required DNS records before sending major campaigns.

Migration timing
Avoid moving immediately before a launch or other high-stakes campaign.

It’s also worth asking whether switching platforms addresses the actual problem. If the issue is unclear strategy, weak content, poor list quality, or inconsistent sending, new software may not fix it.

Create a migration checklist, test with a small group, and keep an export of your original subscriber data. Most importantly, make sure people who unsubscribed remain unsubscribed.

For anyone who has migrated an email list: what did you wish you had checked beforehand?
