isp blocks dns that isn’t theirs

I am not very advanced, so the title may have been misleading. From the results of my testing, 1: no other dns works other than my isp's. Changing the dns to anything else makes websites unable to load. 2: other dns works flawlessly with vpn 4: some sensorship from the isp (I live in the US), for example, secure mode is forced on youtube (probably not a dns issue) 3: i tried using firefox with its built in vpn (a browser based free vpn sounds very appealing, and I don't want to use system-wide vpn all the time), but somehow, I need a different vpn to turn that on, because otherwise it sends me into an infinite account-setup loop (probably the vpn is blocked or something). 5: Not sure if it's exactly a DNS issue, but websites load extremely slowly without me using a vpn. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
