Most self-managed servers run their own DNS with ns1 and ns2 pointing at the same machine. It works — until the machine doesn't. A reboot for a kernel update, a DDoS, a disk problem, and every domain on that box disappears from the internet, mail included. Registrars keep asking for two nameservers on different networks for exactly this reason.
Everyone knows the fix — a second authoritative nameserver somewhere else. Almost nobody does it, because by hand it's painful: allow-transfer and NOTIFY on the primary, a matching zone list on the secondary, and every new domain registered there too, forever. Hosting panels make it worse by regenerating the DNS config underneath you.
