Introduction:

Hi everyone, I am a Data Scientist with 5+ years of experience mostly in the Gov. Contracting sector. I was recently laid off in February of this year due to DOGE cuts and used that time to finish planning my wedding and move across the country for my wife's school.

Now, I have been seriously applying for remote positions for over a month and have submitted at least 100 "real" applications. That is to say, apps directly on the company's website, rather than LinkedIn or their EasyApply feature.

Job Search Details:

As said previously, I am currently searching for a (Senior) Data Scientist role in general–regardless of sector/industry.

I currently reside in a state (Montana) where there are, simply, no DS roles that are in person/on-site. Thus, I am strictly targeting remote roles and am open to travel if necessary. These are the kinds of jobs that I have been applying to, but have been met with either complete silence, or swift rejections. I am not willing to relocate, as it is necessary to reside where I currently am for my wife.

I currently hold an active Top Secret (no SCI or poly) clearance. I consider that as, probably, the most desirable part of my resume right now simply due to the number of people that hold one. However, TS clearances aren't that relevant when it comes to roles because they usually entail being in SCIFs. Either way, I can still use it for Secret roles which can be remote etc.

Why I'm seeking help:

So, I was extremely lucky coming out of my M.S. program in that I landed a job within a couple months which is insane. I stayed there for a year and leveraged that position to get a higher paid role at Booz Allen and stayed there for 4 years. I have been extremely fortunate to never have a long job search. But, that also means that I do not have the requisite experience of navigating said long job search.

I come here asking for a resume review to get any advice that I possibly can to improve.

To elaborate, I have ONLY heard silence or been sent rejections and am genuinely completely unsure what I am doing wrong. I understand the market is brutal right now AND I'm searching for very competitive remote roles, but I also cannot find a singular in-person role in the entirety of Montana. I feel that my resume, and experience/skills/etc, are very very strong with respect to others in my position. So, I am very demotivated when it feels that my skills are seemingly irrelevant and not wanted considering I just get radio silence from every application.

I was lucky to be able to live with my parents since COVID and have, thus, saved a lot of money. However, over the course of 8 months, a wedding, moving cross country, etc, I have gone through a lot of those funds. It is getting to the point where I'm wondering when I have to worry about the lack of income and the worry/stress is getting to me. I've spent at least 8 hours a day for like 6 weeks fine-tuning my resume, searching for jobs, applying, contacting recruiters, speaking to recruiters on phone screens then never hearing back, etc etc and I genuinely do not know what to do next.

Is it simply a time thing? Do I just need to keep applying and eventually something will stick?
