Namecheap recently published an explanation of the major outage it experienced on August 13.
According to the company, a storm caused the cooling systems at the RadiusDC data center in Phoenix to fail. Temperatures around Namecheap’s equipment reached critical levels, so the affected systems were taken offline to prevent permanent hardware damage.
The outage disrupted shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, EasyWP, Private Email, DNS management, and parts of Namecheap.com. Even Namecheap’s live chat and email support were affected.
Interestingly, existing DNS records continued resolving, but customers couldn’t log in to change their DNS settings during the outage.
My main takeaway is not simply that an outage happened. Every hosting provider can experience downtime. The bigger concern is that a problem at one facility affected so many different Namecheap services at once, including customer support.
Namecheap says it will add more redundancy across its data centers in the United States, Europe, and Asia. I wouldn’t automatically avoid Namecheap because of this incident, but anyone running a business-critical website should keep offsite backups and understand whether their host provides actual geographic failover.
