Tailscale cannot connect to services via domain

I just need a little bit of help.

I've installed Tailscale recently and I'm trying to set it up. Generally speaking, I can connect to the services in my homelab fine via the IP address, but I want to connect to it via the domain name.

My setup is this:

  • Tailscale installed on my Pihole LXC
  • pihole lxc has domain "homelab.com" as A record, and all CNAME records branch off of that "service.homelab.com"
  • I have Nginx Proxy Manager has the reverse proxy to route traffic to the appropriate services.
  • Set it up (hopefully) as a subnet router, and connected it to the tailnet.
  • Set it up as a split DNS nameserver, with the restricted domain being "homelab.com"

Now, this works when I access it via IP address, but as soon as I access it via the CNAME "service.homelab.com" I get a Cloudflare 1016 error, or an origin DNS error. Worth noting that accessing it while connected to it like an exit node,, that works just fine, but I expect it to work since its basically access to the internet.

I just need help with making it so I can connect with using the domain instead. I'm kinda stuck watching videos and reading tutorials but I haven't found a solution yet.
