Has anyone here turned an old laptop into a proper home server and used it alongside VPS/cloud infrastructure?
I’m considering doing this with an old Acer Predator Helios 300 that I no longer use:
- Intel i7-8750H, 6 cores / 12 threads
- 16 GB DDR4 RAM
- 256 GB NVMe SSD
- NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB
My current setup is already somewhat cloud-based. All of my hobby projects run on Hetzner VPSs. I have one small VPS running Coolify, and Coolify connects to two other remote servers where my applications are deployed.
Instead of renting another VPS, I’m wondering if I could add this laptop as another node and use it for some of my hobby projects.
The part I find interesting is that, ideally, the infrastructure location shouldn't matter to the end user. I could have something like:
domain.com → reverse proxy → home server
and the user wouldn't know whether the app is running on Hetzner or on a laptop sitting in my house.
I’d also like to experiment with some LLM-based applications, so the GTX 1060 6 GB is another reason I'm tempted to try this.
I'm not looking for a beginner tutorial as much as real-world experience from people who have actually done this.
What surprised you after moving from VPS/cloud hosting to home infrastructure?
Especially interested in:
- ISP / CGNAT / dynamic IP issues
- Reverse proxy and exposing services publicly
- DNS / domains / HTTPS
- Security concerns
- Power consumption and heat
- Laptop reliability when running 24/7
- Backups and storage
- Docker / Coolify / Proxmox
- Monitoring and uptime
- Whether this is actually worth doing versus renting another VPS
- What you would do differently if starting again
And for anyone running local LLMs, is a GTX 1060 6 GB actually useful enough to justify keeping the GPU in the setup?
I’m basically trying to figure out whether this is a fun and useful homelab project or whether I’m about to spend my entire weekend creating problems that a $5 VPS would have solved in 10 minutes. 😂
