Self-hosting public web apps from home alongside Hetzner VPSs. What am I missing?

I currently host all of my hobby projects on Hetzner VPSs using Coolify.

I have one small VPS running Coolify, which connects to two other remote servers where the applications actually run.

I have an unused Acer Predator Helios 300 sitting around:

• i7-8750H
• 16 GB RAM
• 256 GB NVMe
• GTX 1060 6 GB

I'm considering turning it into another Docker/Coolify node and hosting some of my less important hobby projects from home.

The interesting part is that I want some of these applications to be publicly accessible through normal domains. Ideally, users wouldn't know or care whether the application is running on Hetzner or on a laptop at home.

For those of you doing this:

What are the biggest problems I should expect?

I'm particularly interested in:

• CGNAT / dynamic IPs
• Cloudflare or other reverse-proxy setups
• HTTPS and DNS
• Router/firewall configuration
• Security when exposing a home network
• Keeping the server isolated from the rest of the home network
• Uptime and power outages
• Backups
• Monitoring
• ISP restrictions
• Performance/reliability compared with a VPS

My instinct is that the hardware itself is more than capable for lightweight web apps. The bigger question is everything around it: networking, security, reliability, and maintenance.

If you've gone down this road, I'd love to hear what eventually became the annoying part that you didn't anticipate.

I'm already paying for Hetzner, so this isn't really about saving money. It's more about making use of hardware I already own and learning something along the way.

Worth doing, or just a fun way to create another thing I have to maintain? 😅
