🔐 Seeking Guidance from Cybersecurity Professionals

I’m currently pursuing my MS in Cybersecurity, and as I’m exploring the field more seriously, I’ve realized that there are so many different paths within cybersecurity that it can be quite overwhelming to decide where to start.

I’ve been researching online and reading about different cybersecurity roles, certifications, tools, and career paths, but I’m still confused about one important question:

👉 What is the best L1 / entry-level role to target in Cybersecurity?

I’ve come across roles such as:

• SOC Analyst

• Cybersecurity Analyst

• Security Operations Analyst

• Vulnerability Analyst

• Junior Penetration Tester

• GRC Analyst

• IAM Analyst

• Incident Response roles

For someone who is at the beginning of their cybersecurity career, which of these would be the most realistic and valuable starting point?

I would also really appreciate guidance on certifications.

There are so many options available Security+, ISC2 CC, CEH, CySA+, eJPT, Microsoft/Azure security certifications, etc. And I’m not sure which ones are actually worth prioritizing for an entry-level role.

More importantly, I want to focus on skills rather than collecting certifications.

So, for those already working in cybersecurity:

🔹 What technical concepts should a beginner absolutely know before applying for their first cybersecurity job?

🔹 How important are Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, ports, protocols, firewalls, VPNs, etc.)?

🔹 Which Linux skills should I learn?

🔹 Should I learn Windows/Active Directory in depth?

🔹 How important are SIEM tools such as Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, or ELK?

🔹 What level of knowledge should I have in incident response, threat detection, vulnerability management and log analysis?

🔹 Which tools should I get hands-on experience with?

🔹 Are platforms such as TryHackMe, Hack The Box, LetsDefend, or home labs useful for building a portfolio?

🔹 What kind of projects/labs would actually make a beginner’s CV stand out?

And finally:

If you were starting your cybersecurity career again today, what would your roadmap look like for the first 6–12 months?

I would genuinely appreciate advice from SOC Analysts, Cybersecurity Analysts, Security Engineers, Penetration Testers, GRC professionals, hiring managers, or anyone working in the field.

I’m trying to avoid blindly following the “get 5 certifications and apply everywhere” approach and instead build real, job-relevant skills.
