I have wireless home internet (not sure if 4g or 5g) which runs through Verizon's XCI55AX router. Just in the past week I've been having issues with my DNS server settings. I have my computer set to use 8.8.8.8 (google) as its DNS server. However, it cannot reach 8.8.8.8 over port 53 to make a DNS request, nor can it reach 1.1.1.1. If I set my computer to use my verizon router as the DNS server,it resolves addresses fine, and my internet works well.
Digging further, in wireshark, I see my DNS requests get an IGMP reply of "unreachable." Trying to reach any website on the internet with "nmap -p 53" shows the port as "filtered."
To summarize, I am unable to use a custom DNS server on any device on my LAN. As of a week ago, I am only able to use my router as the DNS server.
All of this indicates that my verizon router is blocking port 53. Is my logic wrong? Has anyone else seen anything like this?
