should I DNS first marathon with IT band syndrome?

Hi fellow runners! I’m 24F and have been running 20-30 mpw for a few years. I’m signed up for my first marathon in 10 weeks and training was going super well until ~3 weeks ago. I was building mileage successfully (10%/week), tolerating the increased volume well, and hitting pace goals in my workout with a goal time of 4:30. After a LR workout (14 w/ 2×4 at MP) I had severe IT band pain, so consulted my PCP and an ortho who diagnosed IT band syndrome. I’m currently in PT (ouch!)

I have been doing my best to keep up volume with the elliptical and short, slower runs (~5-6 miles) and can run for ~1hr pain free, but know I’ve lost some fitness and worry I know I’ll have to adjust my goals and training plan if I decide to take the start line. I could maybe fit in one 20 miler if everything continues to improve, but would have many fewer miles on my legs than I’d hoped. A part of me thinks that if I can’t run my best race, I should DNS. What would others do in my situation?

TLDR – trying to decide whether to race in 10 weeks despite lost fitness, volume, training time due to (now improving) IT band syndrome
