Mild noob here.
I've recently saved a HP EliteDesk 800 G5 from disposal (Intel I5-9500, 16gb RAM, 256 NVME & 1TB NVME).
With the GPU, I take nearly any type of gaming is futile, so have landed here.
Main use case for now is hosting Home Assistant / Home Bridge, Ad blocking DNS, Tailscale or similar, and a minimal Windows 11 VM for occasional use when the home Macs/iOS aren't cutting it for certain things in Excel.
First up – light research points me to – general Linux Server (i.e. with Cockpit to help), ProxMox, or even Linux Server that is immutable/atomic. Any thoughts here or other suggestions?
Secondly – any must do hardware upgrades for the short term, e.g. more RAM, Flex Port change (currently HDMI), etc etc?
Thirdly – not sure if GPU is up to it – low usage Plex or similar.
Probably totally off the chart and just need an old Mac, but a fully stopped back x86 MacOS VM for Content Caching, could be handy in our Apple dominated house.
