Here's an honest rundown — what's installed, and how well it actually runs in this Termux/proot-distro setup ():

How its running on the 28 Thermal

**Desktop & GUI**

– Ubuntu (proot-distro) — ✅ rock solid, this is the foundation everything sits on

  • XFCE4 + VNC — ✅ works great, real desktop, real windows
  • Chromium / Firefox — ✅ both work fine through the desktop
  • FreeCAD — ✅ works, a bit heavy to load

**Dev Toolchains**

– Python, Node, Go, Rust, PHP, Ruby, R — ✅ all install and run cleanly

  • GCC/Clang/LLVM — ✅ full compiling works, no issues
  • VS Code — ✅ works well, extensions install fine

**AI & LLM (offline)**

– llama.cpp + local models — ✅ works, genuinely useful with zero signal

  • Custom chat/memory tools — ✅ solid, this is the standout feature honestly

**Amateur Radio & SDR**

– CHIRP, FLDIGI, WSJT-X, GQRX, CubicSDR — ✅ all install fine, haven't tested with real SDR hardware yet (no dongle)

  • Gpredict, Xastir, Direwolf — ✅ installed, untested in practice

**Creative & Media**

– GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, darktable — ✅ all work through the desktop, some are heavy on load time

  • VLC, OBS — ✅ fine
  • Strawberry — ✅ works well, internet radio built in

**Office & Publishing**

– LibreOffice — ✅ works

  • TeX Live full — ✅ works, but it's a genuinely massive install (4-5GB alone)

**Networking**

– Wireshark, nmap — ✅ install and run fine

  • Custom network commands — ✅ solid

**Databases & Virtualization**

– PostgreSQL, MySQL — ⚠️ install fine but **won't actually run as services** — no real init system in proot, so `systemctl`/service management doesn't work. Usable if you manually start the daemon, not out of the box.

  • Docker — ❌ generally doesn't work properly in proot, skipped it
  • QEMU — ⚠️ installs, virtualization performance/support in proot is shaky

**GNOME Software** — ❌ opens but is non-functional (no system D-Bus in proot, so it can't browse/install anything). Use `apt` or Synaptic instead.

**Synaptic** — ✅ works, but needs to be launched as root or it's read-only

**OCR** — ✅ Tesseract works well, multi-language support solid

**Storage/SD card bind** — ✅ works, but took real troubleshooting (Android storage permissions, symlink issues) to get right

**Overall**: genuinely a full working Linux machine on the phone — the GUI apps, dev tools, creative suite, and offline AI all work properly. The main limits are proot's lack of a real init system (no background services) and no real hardware access (so USB SDR dongles, cameras, etc. need separate handling, not something Ubuntu itself can reach into directly).
