I tried using the Claude AI app to figure out why the above happened and what it said about this just didn't make sense. Hopefully one of you can make it make sense.
I signed out of Proton Drive and back in. I assumed it would resync everything and since it was 99% the same, it wouldn't take long. Instead, nothing was resyncing. If i drilled down through the Proton drive folders, file and folder names showed, but everything had the little cloud to the right because nothing was there. If I double clicked a file, it would then "download" and open.
Claude told me when you sign out of Drive or any cloud sync app, everything gets "moved" to a folder in ~/Library/CloudStorage. The folder name for me under CloudStorage is "ProtonDrive-xxxxxxxx@proton.me-folder (8-12-26 2/51 PM)". There was another one there named similarly, but it had a date of about 2 months ago. The file size was in bytes, so it was obviously empty. The recent one (named above) has 21 GB in it so that's where everything is physically/digitally.
Claude says that's how things work and it always stores cloud stuff there but somehow makes it look like it's directly under Proton Drive. But all my links, aliases, finder sidebar shortcuts, etc. were created using Proton Drive as the top level. So now all of those don't work. Aliases on my desktop going to folders in Proton Drive don't work anymore. If I create a new finder shortcut using the CloudStorage path, it finds everything. It appears it's all there in that new location.
When I deleted a file under the CloudStorage folder path, it doesn't sync. When I delete a file, or at least the name under Proton Drive, it does sync and delete in the cloud. This makes sense.
I think there's a realistic way to "fix" this. I mean, there was another folder from two months ago and it's now not being used and I never had to go through this folder path to get to anything in Proton Drive.
How do I make this work the way it was before? Could I move everything to be under proton, but the syncing process may not make that work.
