buying a domain name for the first time, what should I know?

I'm about to register my first domain and feel like there are a lot of things nobody talks about.
i understand the basic process, but i'm not sure about stuff like privacy settings, renewal prices, DNS records, and whether moving a domain later is difficult.
anything you wish someone told you before buying your first domain?
