Tried buying an $8 .dev domain — one registrar wants govt ID, another wants PAN card. For $8.
Wanted a cheap .dev domain for my portfolio site, thought it'd be a 5-min job. Instead:
– Registrar A (~$8.75) — asked for government ID verification via a third-party vendor before checkout
– Registrar B (~$8-10) — asked for PAN card details, apparently required by their INR payment processor for RBI compliance
For an $8 domain. Not a bank account, not crypto, just a domain name.
Registrar A says it's a fraud-prevention step for "flagged" accounts/regions and doesn't retain the docs themselves (just a pass/fail from their verification vendor). Registrar B's PAN requirement is tied to their UPI/INR card processor specifically — apparently paying in USD instead skips it.
Still feels like a lot of friction for something this cheap. About to try a couple of other well-known registrars next since neither's needed this so far.
Anyone dealt with this? Which registrar do you actually use without this KYC drama for small purchases?
