I've been a software engineer my entire career (20+ years) and an engineering manager for the past 7 years. I wanted to help a friend out by enhancing her website for her small business.
She used a Wix template for her website which is mostly fine even though it looked terrible and was completely not responsive but I'm not directly blaming Wix for that. She did the best she could.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE how many BS hoops Wix makes you go through to get out from under their purposefully confusing, extremely rigid, evil platform.
This is all I wanted to do:
- Use Cloudflare Pages to host a single static responsive, "enhanced" HTML page.
- Keep her domain emails working.
Here's her initial setup:
- She registered her domain with Wix.
- She hosted her templated website with Wix.
- She paid for a couple business email addys which use Google Workspace under the hood.
Here's Wix's policies:
- You CANNOT use custom DNS servers at Wix. I've read plenty of posts that say contact support and they will change them. They won't. So I have to move her domain to a real registrar. They have some bandaid workaround using CNAME records but that means you have to have a static public IPv4 addy which Cloudflare Pages does not (zone apex). So after initiating the transfer from Wix I had to wait 7 days to move the domain temporarily to spaceship.io (GoDaddy for example takes minutes). I say temporarily because Cloudflare won't let domain resellers transfer domains directly to them. Transfers have to go through a vetted, trustworthy, real registrar. So I have to keep the domain at spaceship.io for 60 days before I can transfer it to Cloudflare. Don't buy a domain through a reseller.
- You CANNOT just cancel your business email addy subscription afaik. You have to turn off auto renewal. Then your Wix business email subscription goes into a "suspended" state and domain emails stop working. If you try to use another Google account to set that same legitimate domain in Google Workspace you can't because Wix has it locked under the "Wix admin Google account" when it was set up through Wix. You also cannot simply login to that "Wix admin Google account" and add a real Google Workspace subscription to it because the current subscription is suspended and all other Google subscriptions are disabled.
What a f**king PITA Wix! I'm now having to try and deal with tier 2 Wix support to get the domain setup correctly using Google Workspace. Unbelievable!
Does anyone else have horror stories like this or am I just lucky?
