How would you monetize a privacy extension (auto-cookie decline + ToS summarizer)? Looking for advice on freemium vs. subscription models.

How would you monetize a privacy extension (auto-cookie decline + ToS summarizer)? Looking for advice on freemium vs. subscription models.

We lose an incredible amount of digital privacy every day simply out of inconvenience. Between endless 20-page Terms of Service agreements and site pop-ups forcing you to manually uncheck dozens of tracking cookie toggles just to read an article, most people hit "Accept All" or "I Agree" to get on with their day.

I spent some time building a tool called Fine Print Guard to solve this exact problem for myself:

Automated Privacy & Consent: Auto-deselects tracking cookies and enforces privacy preferences in the background.

Legal & Policy Summaries: Analyzes ToS/privacy policies, condenses core terms into 4 sentences, and assigns a privacy grade.

Threat Defense: Warns before typing phone numbers into forms to reduce spam and flags spoofed/copycat sites.

Ad & Tracking Defense: Integrated DNS ad blocking.

You can check it out on the Chrome Web Store here:

Where I'm stuck on Monetization Strategy:

I’m currently offering it as a free tool to build a user base, but I'd like to monetize it sustainably down the road. Someone recommended keeping it 100% free for 1–2 months before introducing paid tiers.

I’m lost on how to structure this without turning off privacy-conscious adopters:

Freemium vs. Subscription vs. One-Time Fee: Should I offer a free base version (e.g., unlimited cookie auto-declining) and put advanced features behind a paywall (e.g., AI ToS summaries or DNS ad-block)? Or go strictly subscription (monthly vs. yearly)?

Feature Gating: What specific capabilities would you leverage as the "hook" that users would actually pay for?

Pricing Structure: Is a low monthly fee ($2–$4/mo) better, or an annual plan with a heavy discount (e.g., $20/yr) to reduce churn?

For those who have monetized browser extensions or micro-SaaS tools, what monetization model worked best for you? What traps should I avoid when transitioning from a free launch to a paid model?
