This has been an issue for a bit now, and I'm running out of ideas to test. I'm running Debian 13, and Speedtest CLI reports my network consistently getting between 600-1000 Mbps down, depending on if I'm hooked up to ethernet or not. Either way, more than fast enough for me. However, when I actually try and use any application – Firefox, Discord, Steam – pages take an unusually long time to load, games download at kilobits per second, images take 10 seconds to load, etc.
No one else in my household has this problem (and, I'm the only person using Linux). It's the same if I'm wired or using wifi.
Some extra context, and things I've tried already
- My motherboard has a Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller, and MEDIATEK Corp. MT7922 802.11ax PCI Express Wireless Network Adapter. `lsmod` tells me I have the 'r8169' and 'mt7921e' kernel modules for them, respectively.
- I've been using the router provided by my ISP (Quantum Fiber), which has been fine for myself and everyone else until fairly recently.
- I have OpenVPN installed for work, but only enable it while working from home – the problem persists with it turned off.
- I've disabled wireless power management
- I've tried disabling MAC address randomization
- I've tried disabling IPV6
- I've tried clearing DNS cache
- I changed my default DNS server to Google's, and that actually did fix the problem, but it came back after about a week for some reason. Messing with it after that hasn't changed much.
- I took a spare hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Debian 13 onto it on my PC. When booting from that drive, fresh network config and everything, same issue.
I haven't been able to find anything conclusive, yet, and I'm hoping someone out there might be able to point me in the right direction.
