Hi guys I’ve created a home network diagram as I’m learning computer networking in hopes of eventually getting a job after school (I’m in college in the uk)in cloud computing or something adjacent. I’ve also written a paragraph explaining my diagram, I’m wondering if anything needs correcting and if i should post it on GitHub.
This diagram is of my home network. The digram starts with the internet, a global network connecting millions of clients, which is connected to the router through my ISP (internet service provider), the router manages traffic between networks. The router contains the gateway which allows devices to communicate with external networks. The router also contains DNS and DHCP. DNS (Domain name system) translates domain names e.g google.com into IP Addresses for your device to access the correct website. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically assigns IP addresses to devices on the network using a process called DORA (Discover, Offer, Request and Acknowledge). The router connects wireless devices such as phones to the internet using wi-fi. For wired devices the router is connected to a switch which uses Ethernet cables to connect wired devices like a printer to the internet, both wired and wireless devices are both given unique private IP addresses from DHCP, to distinguish which device data should be sent to from the router.
