I've been getting very frequent internet dropouts lately, and every time I contact WOW, their customer support is less than helpful. They always try to blame it on my equipment, so I bought a new modem, ran Cat 6 through my entire house, and made sure all of the wires right up to the service box where their line comes in were good.
Then I decided to start tracking these dropouts. I wrote a script that pings my modem, as well as Google four times every 5 minutes. If the modem connection fails, it'll log an internal outage. It pings google 4 times next. If any of those pings fail, it'll calculate packet loss as a percentage of ping attempts. If all four pings to google fail, it'll ping OpenDNS as a fallback.
Here's what I've observed so far:
Between 09/06-09/19, I've had 53 external internet dropouts logged (granted, there could be others that slip through the 5 minute window, but this is significantly less than the 99.9% uptime they advertise).
Modem uptime has been 100% without fail.
I haven't had a dropout on a Wednesday. Monday, Tuesday, and Friday are the heaviest dropout days, and the dropouts happen almost exclusively between the hours of 10am-5pm, with a staggering majority of them happening between 2-3pm.
Starting to think this is an infrastructure issue.
