I have always been interested in creating a homelab and was finally able to have the hardware to actually start something. I have a computer engineering background, but work with industrial power systems, but never dived into networking or anything of the sort.
I have an old gaming laptop with a i7-8750H, 16GB DDR4 Ram, 256GB SSD, and a 1050ti. Installed Ubuntu Server and I'm running CasaOS, as I'm not too familiar with navigating the terminal (though I do intend to learn) but just wanted to get me rolling in the right direction.
So far I've setup a Minecraft server with crafty for my buddies which has been running pretty smoothly. But past that I'm not really sure what I want to try to learn/do. I was going to try setting up a media server with the arr stack but realized it makes more sense for me personally to just stream it.
Was going to setup pi-hole but learned that I can't change DNS because I have an Xfinity gateway that restricts changing the DNS settings. I could just buy my own equipment and bridge it to the gateway, but for the time being, just don't want to spend extra money on anything until I decide how deep into this I really want to go.
As a newbie still trying to learn through experimentation and just trying things, any ideas on what I should try? Also any resources that could help me learn would be greatly appreciated!
