Ren is composed, assertive, disciplined and intensely self-assured.
He's stoic without being emotionless. He smirks, laughs, converses normally and possesses a grounded charisma. His presence is more majestic and commanding than flamboyant.
Where Gojo can be irreverent, playful and deliberately obnoxious, Ren carries himself more like a soldier.

I. 1998–2002 — Before the War

No one explaining cursed energy to him.
No family archive detailing his technique.
As far as anyone knew, the Kurogane family had absolutely nothing to do with Jujutsu.
In reality, Ren possessed an exceptionally distant genetic connection to the Zen'in lineage. Somewhere across generations of forgotten offshoots and ordinary civilian descendants, that connection survived.
But unlike Yuta's distant relationship to the Gojo lineage, Ren's ancestry is never uncovered.

There isn't going to be a dramatic revelation in which someone tells Ren that his abilities came from the Zen'in.

And it provides a wonderfully ironic explanation for Ren's natural superiority streak.

Ren's earliest childhood was otherwise relatively ordinary.

IV. The Magical-Boy Era
This is essentially Ren's first series.
Long before he knows that Jujutsu society exists, Ren develops a bizarre double life.
To ordinary adults, he's a troublesome, fiercely independent kid with a tendency to disappear.
To Ren?
He's conducting operations.
He can see monsters.
Other people apparently can't.
He possesses some strange energy that allows him to interact with those monsters.
Therefore, as far as young Ren is concerned, the situation is fairly obvious:
Someone needs to kill them.
So he does.
Initially, his understanding is incredibly primitive.
He doesn't know the term cursed energy.
He doesn't know what an innate technique is.
He doesn't understand why curses exist.
He has never heard of Jujutsu sorcerers.
He doesn't know there are official grades.
He doesn't know that there are entire families who have practiced Jujutsu for centuries.
He certainly doesn't know that his natural CE reserves are extraordinary.
Ren just knows:
I can see them.
I can hurt them.
They hurt people.
They're the enemy.
And thus, at an absurdly young age, Ren declares his own private war on cursed spirits.
V. Learning Cursed Energy Without Knowing Its Name
The most extraordinary part of young Ren isn't simply that he possesses Cursed Energy Implosion.
It's that he independently begins learning basic cursed-energy manipulation without knowing what he's manipulating.
His discoveries are experimental.
He notices that directing this strange internal energy into his body makes him stronger.
Eventually he begins developing primitive reinforcement.
He realizes that putting more energy behind physical contact makes his attacks more effective.
He experiments with controlling its flow.
And, most importantly, he discovers his innate technique.
Cursed Energy Implosion
Young Ren doesn't understand its theoretical mechanism.
He simply discovers that the strange energy comprising these monsters can be made to collapse inward.
For a child hunting low-grade cursed spirits, this is an obscenely powerful starting advantage.
Grade Four curses rapidly cease being serious opponents.
Ren doesn't need the physical strength of an adult sorcerer when his innate technique directly attacks the cursed energy constituting the target itself.
And so his little war escalates.
VI. Ren's Childhood Power Progression
His childhood shouldn't be interpreted as Ren struggling equally against every grade until somebody formally trains him.
He's a future Special Grade with an inherently devastating anti-curse technique and enormous natural CE.
His progression reflects that.
Early childhood — Grade Four
Grade Fours are Ren's introductory enemies.
There may be uncertainty when he first begins encountering and fighting them, but once he understands the basic relationship between his CE and Implosion, they become relatively trivial.
They're the first targets he learns to reliably exorcise.
Later childhood — Grade Three
Grade Threes become his first proper recurring opponents.
These are the fights that give his childhood that anime adventure quality.
Some are straightforward.
Some have strange appearances or behaviors.
Some force him to improvise.
Some lead him into abandoned buildings, alleys, shrines, tunnels, construction sites and other places where curses accumulate.
Ren gets thrown around.
He damages his clothes.
He gets bruised.
He wins.
Over time, Grade Three becomes familiar territory.
Older childhood — Grade Two
Grade Two represents a significant escalation.
Initially these are dangerous.
Ren can no longer assume that simply being capable of exorcising something means an engagement is sensible.
But he continues improving.
By his later childhood, Ren can kill individual Grade Two curses.
Some remain troublesome.
Several simultaneously can overwhelm his available capacity and force him to disengage.
But Grade Two is no longer an impossible enemy.
By thirteen, his overall combat ability sits roughly around what we'd describe as Semi-Grade 2 sorcerer territory, despite having received absolutely no formal Jujutsu education.
And then Ren discovers the wall.
VII. The Grade One Incident
Sometime before Jujutsu society discovers him, Ren encounters the strongest cursed spirit he has ever seen.
He doesn't know it's a Grade One.
Ren has developed his own informal hierarchy for cursed spirits based upon years of experience, and this thing sits beyond everything he previously understood.
He attacks it.
And gets absolutely fucking demolished.
Implosion works—but not well enough.
His reinforcement isn't enough.
His self-taught fighting isn't enough.
The curse's CE and strength are far beyond the Grade Twos he's learned to handle.
Everything Ren tries gets answered.
For the first time, young Ren encounters something that makes the conclusion unavoidable:
I cannot win this engagement.
So Ren retreats.
That is an important moment in his development because it reinforces something that becomes central to his adult philosophy.
A soldier's responsibility isn't to die proving that he was brave.
If an enemy exceeds your operational capacity and continued engagement accomplishes nothing, you withdraw.
Ren survives.
And rather than being ashamed, he analyzes the failure.
He simply wasn't strong enough.
Yet.
In his private childhood mythology, that curse essentially becomes the highest tier of monster Ren believes exists.
He has no idea that Jujutsu society would merely call it Grade One.
Special Grade hasn't even entered his vocabulary.
VIII. The Alleged Delinquent
Meanwhile, the mundane world has a completely different interpretation of Kurogane Ren.
This kid keeps disappearing.
He returns with:
scratches,
bruises,
torn clothes,
blood,
occasional more serious injuries,
and extremely unhelpful explanations.
"Where were you?"
"Operation."
"What happened to your face?"
"Hostile."
"Who did you fight?"
"Didn't get its name."
That sounds fucking horrendous when you can't see curses. 😭
Naturally, people begin assuming Ren fights.
His school reputation develops accordingly.
He's the strange delinquent-looking kid from the children's home who apparently gets into fights nobody actually witnesses.
Rumors grow.
Ren doesn't help himself because he's naturally confident and assertive rather than timid.
And crucially:
Ren isn't bullied.
He is an absolutely terrible bullying target.
This is a child who regularly confronts literal supernatural monsters.
Another kid trying to intimidate him doesn't inspire much fear.
He doesn't need to become some sadistic schoolyard fighter. His composure alone makes it clear that trying to terrorize Kurogane is probably a bad investment.
Eventually people mostly leave him alone.
Some think he's dangerous.
Some think he's incredibly cool.
Some are curious about him.
Some become friends.
Some adults worry about him.
And almost everybody completely misunderstands where the injuries actually come from.
IX. The Civilian Cast of Ren's Childhood
This period isn't just Ren versus curses.
It has its own people.
That's essential.
There are other children at the home—some temporary friendships, some longer relationships, kids who eventually leave, kids Ren occasionally clashes with, kids who think his mysterious disappearances are fascinating.
There are staff members who become recurring adult figures.
Teachers.
Shopkeepers.
Police officers who've had to deal with Ren wandering somewhere he shouldn't.
People around Kyoto who recognize him.
The elderly stall owner we've discussed fits perfectly into this period.
An old man occasionally gives this strange kid a sweet.
Ren eventually protects the man's stall from a Grade Three curse.
The old man can't properly see the creature but witnesses enough impossible physical effects to conclude that Ren has protected him from some kind of evil spirit.
He never learns Jujutsu terminology.
He doesn't need to.
He's simply one of those strange little relationships Ren accumulates during his childhood adventures.
That's why adult Ren can genuinely feel nostalgic for these years.
His parents' deaths were terrible.
But his childhood wasn't nothing except their deaths.
He lived.
He made memories.
He had adventures.
He met people.
He discovered his abilities.
He won fights.
He lost fights.
He explored Kyoto.
He developed his personality.
And he genuinely enjoyed parts of his private war.
Adult Ren might even consider those years uniquely special because there was something he can never recover:
The supernatural world was mysterious.
He didn't know the rules.
Every new curse taught him something.
Every new application of CE was a discovery.
Every victory expanded what he believed himself capable of doing.
Adult Ren knows vastly more.
Child Ren was discovering the world one operation at a time.
