Where domain hunters compare notes

Email? The part of buying a domain nobody warns you about

Bought a domain for a small shop last month and the checkout tried three times to sell me a mailbox with it. Skipped that, pointed the name at the host, built the site, all fine. Two weeks later the owner asked why her contact form messages were landing in spam and why the address printed on her cards bounced.

The godaddy domain name email setup is a seperate product from the domain, and the dns records that make it work are seperate again. Nobody tells a first time buyer that the name, the hosting and the mailbox are three purchases that happen to be sold on one screen. She had assumed buying the name gave her the address, wich is a completely reasonable thing to assume if you have never done this before.

We put her mail somewhere else and it came out cheaper than the bundle. The habit I took from it is to write down where each of the three things lives, on paper, before the day you need to move one of them.
