I was trying to figure out how I got interested in Blokada. It goes back to DDG. At the time, I thought this was the privacy solution everyone needed. Then my iPhone friend wasn't impressed. And then, I learned that several people had clever ways to block ads and trackers, and that this was even more important to them than having a VPN.
I had been using DDG with NextDNS when I stumbled onto folks on Reddit talking about this curious little app called Blokada 4.
After that, I was hooked. So much so that I've learned how to speak in all 3 "languages": Blokada 4, 5, and 6, and pretty much use them interchangeably.
The nerd in me likes Blokada 4. It's got so many things you can tweak! 😇 You can even import a blocklist. Try doing that in NextDNS…
Blokada 5 is like a streamlined version of 4: fewer nobs and switches, but easier to view blocked and allowed, and no import functions. Honestly, some folks consider it a downgrade from 4, but it can be setup very quickly.
Finally, there is Blokada 6, the company's first subscription model. I like it because it gives me an alternative to NextDNS, AdGuard, and Control-D. Once you get your private DNS setup, it's always there, blocking ads and trackers in the background, with almost no drain on your battery.
Here's a fun fact to know and tell: if you subscribe to Blokada Plus, you can run their VPN in any one of the three models! Awesome, like, whatever floats your boat 🚢.
