Quicksilver Server

A small project I always wanted to do and finally got the chance.

It's a simple gamer server that hosts ~4-5 game servers and backs up files from our personal computers.

I went through some lengths to keep the factory aesthetics and functionality intact:

– front speaker functions (USB jumpers power a PAM8406 amp, fed by 3x jumper feed from HD Audio)

– makes Mac sounds (mac intel boot chime, "Sosumi" for denied, "Uh-oh" for command not found, iChat buddy login/out sound for ssh login detected

– front I/O LED works via direct soldered leads jumped to I/O header (minus the Apple "pulse" cause… that's it's own circuit and enough was enough)

– utilized the factor ATX PS2 rear panel to slap a 80mm fan in and AC bulkhead connector as not to ruin the plastics

– side panel door functions perfect, as does rear lock

Interior isn't finished and I'm not a "the inside of my PC must look nice" type, especially on a server. Likely will consist of 2x HDD's when prices come down in 2045. So it gets a floating 850 Evo SSD for now.

– laserhive G4 motherboard tray kit

– Dremel, drill bits, and an angle grinder with cutoff wheel

– Ryzen 5 5700G

– AS Rock AM4 B850 something mATX

– 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz

– Way too big power supply

– fans in OE locations (80mm up top vent, 120mm bottom feed), BeQuiet low profile CPU fan

It was my first Linux anything ever, so ended up with what I assume is standard.

– Ubuntu Server

– ssh key auth, UFW, Fail2Ban, on isolated VLAN with Tailscale

– Docker stuff (Portainer, Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, Syncthing, Pi-hole) – not all utilized yet

– 4-5 game servers, DuckDNS, nothing wild, open world ADHD chore-doing and building games
